Rudus and One Click LCA partner to decarbonize the concrete industry

Written by Kim Koivula | Aug 20 2025

In the Nordics, the decarbonization of the concrete industry has been slowed down by the limited availability and number of Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs). The new partnership between Nordic concrete leader Rudus and One Click LCA aims to address this issue: together, by publishing a comprehensive set of EPDs covering Rudus's entire product range—from stone products to concrete. This long-term collaboration represents a significant step for the entire concrete sector and is expected to accelerate the industry's shift towards low-carbon construction.

Helsinki, Finland (20.8.2025). Rudus, the leading manufacturer of concrete and stone-based construction materials in the Nordics, and part of the international CRH Group, has entered into a multi-year collaboration with One Click LCA, the world-leading lifecycle assessment platform, to produce Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs). The EPDs created through the partnership will cover Rudus's entire product portfolio, from stone products to concrete. The first EPDs produced with One Click LCA’s tools will be released in the coming months and made publicly available to all construction industry stakeholders.

The lack of available EPDs has been a bottleneck in Finland’s efforts to reduce the concrete sector’s emissions. Concrete production accounts for roughly 7% of global CO₂ emissions, and low-carbon concrete and concrete products are among the most effective ways to cut emissions from construction. EPDs are a critical tool for managing environmental impacts in construction, offering reliable data on the lifecycle environmental effects of products and supporting the industry’s goals to reduce its climate impact significantly.

"This collaboration is an important step in our goal to make construction genuinely more sustainable. Through EPDs, we can offer our customers more transparent information on the carbon footprint of our products, which supports the entire construction sector in reducing its climate impact."

Mikko Vasama, CEO of Rudus Oy

Panu Pasanen, CEO of One Click LCA, emphasises the broader impact of the collaboration:

"Rudus, as a leading player committing to create EPDs, helps accelerate the Finnish concrete industry’s shift toward carbon transparency and low-carbon products. We're very excited to help Rudus reach its decarbonization goals."

Panu Pasanen, CEO of One Click LCA

Emission reductions are most effective when implemented in the construction design phase, particularly in material selection. By providing extensive EPDs, Rudus equips architects and engineers with accurate, up-to-date information to make informed material choices.

A low-carbon future in concrete requires innovation

According to Finnish government experts, the future of the concrete industry hinges on the development and adoption of innovative, low-carbon solutions. Emissions can be further reduced by increasing the use of recycled materials in concrete production.

Rudus is a clear market leader and trendsetter in the Nordic concrete industry. Its sustainability strategy includes an ambitious goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. The company has already launched several low-carbon solutions, such as its “Grön Betong” (Green Concrete) product line, which enables up to 60% lower CO₂ emissions compared to standard concrete. In landscaping products, CEVO paving stones now emit 57% less CO₂ than equivalent products from 2020. Rudus already uses lower-carbon cement types extensively in production and actively explores new materials and circular economy solutions through research and development projects.
