Globally, lighting accounts for approximately 13% of electricity consumption and 5% of greenhouse gas emissions - almost double compared to aviation. This makes lighting energy efficiency and environmental impact reduction a crucial part of achieving climate goals.
Greenled – a turnkey lighting solution provider to companies and the public sector – performed their own analysis which revealed that up to 98% of the company's carbon footprint comes from its products. This key finding highlighted the need to invest in developing lighting products whose environmental impacts can be significantly reduced throughout their lifecycle.
"The share of lighting in global energy consumption and emissions is so significant that we must act purposefully if we want to influence things"
— Jani Kaaresto, Sustainability Manager at Greenled Group
Greenled chose One Click LCA’s EPD Generator to analyse their products' environmental impacts and find the most effective ways to reduce emissions. The tool enabled precise analysis of the A1-A3 phases (raw material procurement, transportation, and manufacturing) of two key products, the Vega S street light and Phi Vision indoor light.
Analyses and life-cycle calculations have now been produced for several Greenled products. A significant development step is the frame material of Sirius and Vega S and M luminaires, which is 100% recycled consumer-collected aluminum. Indoor luminaires with aluminum frames also switched to using recycled aluminum in 2024. At the beginning of 2025, Greenled will launch a completely new luminaire product family where, in addition to material choices, the maintainability and reuse of the luminaire have been taken to a new level. Thanks to this development work, the environmental impact of the luminaire's entire life-cycle can be significantly reduced.

"This kind of innovation and product development is crucial in reducing the industry's total emissions and fighting climate change. Both large and small manufacturers' responsibility in reducing construction industry emissions is increasingly emphasized as emissions from other sectors, such as the energy sector, decrease. Greenled shows by example that every industry player can make significant climate actions."
— Tuomas Jääskeläinen, Business Developer at One Click LCA
Greenled also considers buyers' needs and market economic steering in their strategic development work. One Click LCA's EPD Generator and its extensive database have played a key role in building customer trust.
"In the end, it's about buyers valuing transparency and valid data. With One Click LCA, we can provide them with easily accessible, standardized environmental information that can be directly used in their decision-making"
— Jani Kaaresto, Sustainability Manager at Greenled Group
This customer-oriented approach not only supports Greenled's own goals but also helps customers optimize their sustainability and meet tightening market requirements. In One Click LCA's software, industry-leading manufacturers, contractors, and other actors meet in a shared environment where information flows smoothly from manufacturers to AEC professionals.
Greenled's strategic approach has produced significant results:
"EPDs and lifecycle assessments aren't just for reporting – they're part of our strategy and supporting our customers in their sustainability goals," adds Kaaresto.
Greenled continues to invest in developing environmentally friendly lighting solutions. The company aims to expand the use of recycled materials and prepare for future tightening environmental regulations.
"We want to show that developing sustainable lighting is not just possible, but it can transform the entire industry"
— Jani Kaaresto, Sustainability Manager at Greenled Group
Greenled's success story demonstrates how determined environmental management, automated software solutions, expert LCA guidance, and innovation can together significantly reduce the environmental impact of lighting solutions.
