Swedish Reduction Roadmap initiative

The Reduction Roadmap, an initiative rooted in Denmark’s progressive climate framework, is gaining traction beyond its borders. Leading this initiative in Sweden, Architecture firm Krook & Tjäder AB - with other actors is applying similar principles to meet emission reduction goals in accordance to the Paris Agreement.

"Reduction Roadmap Sweden is based on the Danish framework. The initiative has found that Sweden must reduce its yearly emissions by 95.8%, across all sectors to be aligned with the planetary boundaries. In contrast, the upcoming Swedish climate regulations for housing fail to reach even the IPCC 2°C target and the building industry emissions are far away from the planetary boundaries. In short, as in the Danish case, Swedish regulations are not aligned with our commitment set in the Paris agreement.

The transition to a climate neutral construction industry needs to combine a sharp reduction of emissions per built square meter through circular approaches with a reduced rate of new construction through emphasis on renovation and better utilization of existing buildings.

Reduction Roadmap Sweden's main goal is to influence environmental policy instruments to regulate future emissions. Political decisions of climate targets for different industries need to be based on science-based analysis of the remaining carbon budgets. The Reduction Roadmap is a practical tool for designers, policymakers, and real estate developers to benchmark planned buildings and policy initiatives through science-based analysis of the remaining global carbon budget." - Maria Tjäder, Civil Engineer, Sustainability, Arkitekterna Krook & Tjäder AB
