Challenge

RZB develops technical luminaires for global markets, with a portfolio spanning thousands of SKUs. Customers in sustainable construction, particularly DGNB certification projects, increasingly ask for product-specific EPDs: they want to know the exact share of individual luminaires in a building's total CO₂ footprint. Manual LCA processes without dedicated software were neither reliable nor scalable at this portfolio size.

Solution

RZB chose One Click LCA's Luminaire EPD Generator based on three decisive factors: its luminaire-specific focus, access to a comprehensive LCA database with regional differentiation, direct data import from bills of materials (BOMs), a significant relief given the scale of RZB's portfolio. The software covers the full workflow from material quantities and production data through to CO₂ hotspot visualisation, and supports third-party verification via EPD Hub (ECO Platform-recognised) as well as PEP-EcoPassport for international applications.

Outcome

RZB can now create product-specific EPDs in a standards-compliant and scalable way, delivering verified environmental data. The EPD data also lays the foundation for the environmental improvements RZB is working towards at both product and process level: using waste heat from incineration to power production facilities, applying circular design principles focused on repairability and longevity, and further expanding the use of recycled aluminium, which has already demonstrated a CO₂ reduction of up to 50% in selected luminaires. Having reliable data is the prerequisite for driving these optimisations at scale.
